Revamped Windows Live Begins to Roll Out

As I wrote in mid-November, Microsoft is gradually revamping its Windows Live prodct, adding social networking aspects to it. On Tuesday, Microsoft starting rolling out the changes. Typical of cloud-based services, it’ll take some time; Microsoft says 24 hours.

According to their blog post,

Today we’ve started releasing the first set of updates to our web services, and these will continue to roll out globally over the next 24 hours – including a new version of Windows Live Home, Spaces, Events, and SkyDrive, as well as completely new web services such as Windows Live Groups, Photos, and Profile.

Of interest to many, SkyDrive gets a bump in storage, a large one in fact, to 25 GB.

But besides that, you can import contacts from Facebook or LinkedIn, see what people who are in your network are doing, share stuff. OMG, it’s social networking from the monolithic Microsoft corporation.

And that might work against Microsoft. Not just in terms of not being able to move as quickly as a startup might, but also that staid, old-timer image that Gen-Y might look at in disdain. Funny, that same sort of image was once thrust upon IBM (not that it’s gone away).

What do you readers think? Is anyone out there intrigued enough to switch from Facebook or MySpace?
